For
ruzivo marimba, here is one short night that brought
together our friends and families in song and dance. We welcomed
friends who had not played with us before, because the spirit
of our music is to sing and play with others, not for others.
The
result, while not perfect in its performance, is a true reflection
of the energy that surrounded me as a young boy growing up
with this music in Zimbabwe.
From
the rich complexity of Andrew Tracey's arrangement of the
Kore Kore people's Siti, to the dying lament of the
elders warning the others, "We told you so," in Taireva;
and from playfully deceitful warnings against polygamy in
Paul Matavire's Taurai Zvenyu to the graceful words
of the gospel as sung by the Shona people in Ariko Munyaradzi,
we bring you what we hope will move you to dance with us and
to celebrate everything you do with the music that already
surrounds you in your everyday life, beginning with the joyful
rhythms of the heartbeat that drums your life's song.
